After more than 15 years of dedicated research and writing, John’s book was finally published by the Memoir Club of South Shields at the end of July this year. The work is factual and inspired by a book he discovered in the library of the Atatürk Mausoleum in Ankara, which explores the alleged massacre of Armenians in Turkey in 1915. More broadly, it traces the dramatic transformation from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the birth of the Turkish Republic in 1924.

While not an academic publication, John’s book aims to bring humanity and context to a period where truth often became obscured. His storytelling seeks to illuminate the complexities of a pivotal era in world history.

John chose Broughty Ferry Library for the launch as a symbolic gesture. The library opened on 24 October 1928, and just days later, on 1 November, Atatürk introduced the Latin alphabet in Turkey, replacing the Arabic script. This marked a remarkable cultural shift.
