A talk by Viviene Cree. There was a time in the not-too-distant past when almost every scale and weighing machine in shops, factories and jute mills In Dundee and its surrounding towns carried the proud badge of Joseph Percival Shuttleworth. But who was he, and why did he relocate from Birmingham to Dundee in 1891? What does the story of this small businessman have to tell us about the changing nature of commerce and industry at the end of the nineteenth and into the middle of the twentieth centuries? This family story will shed light on an industry that has now gone but which was once one of the mainstays of Dundee business.

Doors open from 12.30pm at the Glasite Hall on King Street. Please enter from the churchyard or the east side of the building (the lift is available from both sides but the accessible door is at the east entrance).

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available to purchase before the talk. Entry to the talks are free but if you would like to make a donation towards the hire of the hall, there will be a donations tin available.
