Miracles for Sale - The Films of Tod Browning

Miracles for Sale - The Films of Tod Browning Image
Tod Browning was one of the great auteurs of American cinema in the 1920s and 30s, acclaimed and reviled in equal measure for his unique tales of the grotesque and macabre, of circuses and sideshows, of magic and illusion, of physical and psychological disfigurement. Best known for his association with the ‘Man of a Thousand Faces’ Lon Chaney in the 20s, Browning went on to kickstart the horror boom of the 30s with Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi. Many of his films remain challenging and controversial to this day, particularly his portrayals of disability, seen both as sympathetic and empowering and as exploitative and demeaning. This new course will explore Browning’s career in detail, illustrated with numerous extracts and complete feature films.
