Photo City: How Images Shape the Urban World
Look through the lens at how photography shapes the way we experience our cities.
More than half the world’s population now lives in cities, but even those that don’t can still conjure up iconic city images in their minds - the Eiffel Tower, the New York skyline, Tokyo street signs - largely due to the bombardment of images that shape the way we collectively imagine them. This exhibition brings these themes together, exploring the ways the development of cities and photography has been completely intertwined from the 19th century up to the present day.
Sohei Nishino is creating a large-scale photographic diorama of Dundee for this exhibition, which will be the newest addition to his Diorama Map series which includes cities such as Tokyo, London, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro and New Delhi. Drawing on the popularity of aerial photography, these works fuse the micro with the macro - zooming into the intricate details of a city whilst also zooming out to reveal the shapes that form within the urban sprawl. The Dundee Diorama will act as an anchor for the whole exhibition, as a captivating and intricate portrait of Dundee, through the eyes of the photographer and the many encounters and experiences he has during his stay in the city.
