Aimed at pre-start and new businesses, this workshop covers the essentials of becoming an employer, including defining positions, contracting staff, understanding costs, and meeting legal obligations.

This workshop will guide business owners through the journey of what is required to start employing staff, including the necessary insurances prior to registering with HMRC and the timelines involved in this process.

The focus will be on ensuring business owners are clear on the positions or roles they need, defining these roles to understand the time commitment required (e.g., full-time, part-time, or ad hoc). We will then examine the overall costs to the employer, considering factors beyond the hourly rate, and ensuring this rate meets at least the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

Once this understanding is established, we will explore different ways to contract staff and the impact of these choices. The workshop will also cover the legal obligations of business owners, including employment law and health and safety in the workplace.
