RTS Switchover Update (1st July 2025 latest update )

The Radio Signal that controls RTS Electricity Meters was originally meant to be switched off on 30th June 2025. The UK Government has now confirmed that there won’t be a nationwide switch off of RTS meters. Instead, there’ll be a phased transition starting from 30 June in carefully targeted local areas. This means that anyone with an RTS meter won’t risk any disruption to their heating and hot water. Energy suppliers should contact anyone living in an area that has been selected for a phase out well ahead of time.

However if you have ALL electric heating your electricity meter may stop working as intended if not replaced when the phase out starts. For example, the hot water and heating might come on and not switch off or the usage might change to peak rate, meaning you will be paying more for your electricity.
To help prevent this happening your fuel supplier may have been in contact with you to arrange removal of your old meter and installation of a new smart meter.
It is extremely important that you get this meter replaced for the reasons above.

If your supplier has contacted you to arrange an appointment to replace your old meter then you do not need to act.
If your supplier has not been in touch with you to arrange a replacement meter or you have received a letter but have not contacted them yet you must act ASAP.

It is also important to note that if you are on a legacy tariff or Total Heat Total Control this will also change. You will be offered a new tariff like Economy 7 or 10 and it is important you discuss this with your supplier as the on peak and off peak times will be
different from what you are used to.
