Building Standards and Licensing

The local authority is responsible for general licensing, which covers areas such as venues where public entertainment occurs, raised structures like temporary stands for spectators.

  • The issue of liquor licences and the licensing of betting and gaming premises.
  • The issue of licences for houses in multiple occupancy.

These licences are administered by the Licensing Committee and Licensing Board.

Building Standards provides technical expertise to assess the suitability of premises for their intended use. The scope of venues inspected range from houses of multiple occupancy, public houses, bingo halls, hotels, fairgrounds, circuses, pop concerts, cinemas, tented and open air events, clubs, etc.

Legislation associated with licensing includes. Safety of Sports Grounds Act, The Civic Government (Scotland) Act and The Licensing (Scotland) Act.
