Ancient monuments and archaeological areas are scheduled by the Secretary of State where they are considered to be of national importance. Scheduled monuments may include bridges, uninhabited castles, ruined ecclesiastical buildings, early industrial sites (no longer working), associated machinery and adjoining land, as well as archaeological sites. Most works to a scheduled monument will require scheduled consent directly from the Secretary of State.
