Free Bus Travel for Switch On and Hooley

Christmas in Dundee Free Buses features 2026

Free all-day bus travel will help people get to the Dundee Christmas Switch on event (Sunday November 15) and the Dundee Hooley (Sunday November 29).

The move has been taken by Dundee City Council to assist families during the cost of living crisis and to promote more regular bus use.

Meanwhile, free car parking will be on offer for motorists at the Bell Street Hub all day on Sunday November 15 and Sunday November 29.

The local authority is using funding from Tactran’s People and Place Fund to cover the cost of bus journeys within Dundee on the two Sundays. Buses are free all day and cover all bus journeys so people can travel into and across Dundee, as well as enjoying the Christmas events taking place.

The free bus travel offer extends across the ABC Dundee zone meaning communities like Invergowrie, Birkhill, Tayport and Monifieth are also included.

The initiative applies to people aged 22-59 who are not entitled to free bus passes under national schemes. No tickets, cards or forms are required. All people will be able to travel free.

Bus companies Xplore Dundee, Stagecoach and Moffat & Williamson are all taking part.

Dundee City Council transport lead Cllr Siobhan Tolland said: "This is a great way to support families during the ongoing cost of living crisis and get them all to these popular events in Dundee's festive calendar.

"We want families to be able to enjoy these events together in a way that is affordable for them, and free bus travel will be of practical assistance to them. Please take advantage of this free travel. We want these days to be about bringing people together and we hope free bus travel can assist."

"As well as boosting attendances, we also hope that this initiative will encourage people to consider using buses more regularly.

"I'd like to thank Tactran and our bus company partners for making this possible."

Stephen Riggans, Area Director, McGill's Scotland North, said: "This initiative highlights the important role public transport plays in supporting local events and communities. The Christmas Switch On and Dundee Hooley are fantastic occasions that bring communities together and showcase the very best of the city. The offer provides an added incentive for people to leave the car at home and enjoy the convenience of travelling by bus, helping more residents and visitors make the most of the celebrations. We look forward to playing our part in making both events a success."

Fiona Doherty, Stagecoach’s Regional Director for Scotland, said: “We’re pleased to support Dundee City Council’s free travel initiative, making it easier for people to enjoy some of the city’s biggest events. This partnership highlights the important role bus travel can play in connecting communities and encouraging more accessible and sustainable travel.”

There will be city centre road closures during the day of both events, you can find details here https://www.dundee.com/christmas-dundee-road-closures
