Road Safety Report Shows Drop in Serious Casualties

Dundee Pitkerro Road Roadworks Speed Bumps Crossing

A reduction of nearly a third in the number of serious casualties on Dundee's roads over the past year is highlighted in a new report showcasing how road safety measures are being implemented across the city.

Councillors will also hear details of a near £1.7 million investment programme as part of the annual Road Safety and 20mph Progress Report, which will be considered by the City Growth and Infrastructure Committee.

The council's transport lead and committee depute convener, Councillor Siobhan Tolland, recently visited road safety measures that have been put in place on Pitkerro Road to see how investment is being made in the city's streets.

She said: "The council is absolutely committed to improving road safety in the city and ensuring that as few people as possible are injured. This requires a multi-agency approach to improving road layouts, educating road users and enforcing traffic laws.

"We are in no way complacent, and this report illustrates the measures we continue to take across the city. This ranges from extending 20mph zones to introducing more pedestrian crossings.

"The measures planned aim to reduce the number and severity of road accidents. However, everyone has a part to play in achieving this, whether that is driving safely, ensuring vehicles are well maintained, or being alert to other road users. Enforcement by Police Scotland is also crucial in maintaining road safety."

Councillors will also hear how almost £1.7 million is proposed for improvements benefiting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

These include road markings and traffic signs, junction improvements and pedestrian crossings.

The report shows the progress the council is making towards national Scottish Government road safety targets set for 2030 and 2050.

While the 2025 serious casualty data represents a 32% reduction from the previous year, councillors will hear that the figures "appear to have plateaued and remain above the 2030 target."

However, the report goes on to explain: "This highlights the need for continued focus on targeted interventions to drive further sustained reductions and achieve a downward trend."

The committee meets on Monday 24 August.
