Gaelic Language Plan

A revised Dundee Gaelic Language for the next five years will be considered by the City Governance Committee on Monday June 8.
Councillors will hear that a public consultation was carried out to gather views on a draft version of the document earlier this year.
The survey asked about people's experience and use of Gaelic and gathered feedback on any improvements that could be incorporated into the plan.
The draft was then revised following the recommendations from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the principal public body in Scotland responsible for promoting Gaelic development, and feedback from the public consultation.
Key changes include strengthening the city’s commitments to raising awareness of Gaelic education in schools, including a more proactive approach to sharing information with parents.
A specific action was added in relation to Gaelic as a second language to ensure gradual expansion of Gaelic within Dundee schools, including 1+2 languages.
Further action was incorporated into the plan to publish all Gaelic events organised by Dundee City Council on the What’s On website to ensure these opportunities are more visible and more easily found online.
Once final approval is obtained from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the Dundee Gaelic Language Plan 2026-31 will be fully translated into Gaelic and published on the Council website and circulated widely to groups who have an interest in Gaelic.
Preparing and consulting on a Gaelic Language Plan is a statutory duty for all local authorities in Scotland, designed to raise the status and profile of Gaelic and to create
Council leader Councillor Mark Flynn said: “Gaelic has been part of Dundee’s heritage for over 1,000 years and continues to be part of our city today including Gaelic language classes, the Gaelic Choir and signage across the city having Gaelic translations.
“Together, we can ensure that Gaelic continues to enrich Dundee - celebrating our past, strengthening our present and inspiring our future.”
