A leading councillor is welcoming confirmation that construction of a new primary school for the Western Gateway area is now a step closer as Dundee City Council is undertaking preparatory survey works at Newmill of Gray.

The local authority is working closely with housing developer Barratt Homes to help deliver a primary school for the area.

It is anticipated that the new school will open in August 2029 at a budget cost of £25 million, which is contained within the council's Capital Plan 2025-2030.

The council is using a single supplier national framework procurement approach, with Robertson Construction as the appointed contractor.

A project board will be set up and will engage with stakeholders, and a planning application will be submitted by the council for the school.

City Growth and Infrastructure convener Cllr Steven Rome said: "The council has been working hard to deliver a primary school for the Western Gateway. It has been important to liaise closely with the developer to coordinate delivery of the housing development and the primary school.

"I am pleased at the continued progress which is being made on this project.

"The council has allocated £25 million to the school in its capital plan, and that illustrates how committed we are to this hugely important development for the Western Gateway.

"I look forward to the new school taking shape and becoming a real focus of community life for the future."

A representative from Barratt & David Wilson Homes said: "We are pleased to confirm that work on our two Dundee West developments will be commencing shortly. We continue to work closely with Dundee City Council to support the delivery of the proposed new school, which will provide an important educational resource and become a valued part of the Western Gateway community.

"We remain committed to engaging with the Council and local stakeholders as the project progresses, and to ensuring that the development contributes positively and sustainably to the local area."
