Consultation on Gaelic Language Plan

Members of the public are being invited to share their views on Dundee City Council’s draft Gaelic Language Plan for 2026-31.
The Council is committed to giving Gaelic equal respect alongside English and to ensuring that it remains a living, visible part of our city’s cultural life.
Preparing and consulting on a Gaelic Language Plan is a statutory duty for all local authorities in Scotland, designed to raise the status and profile of Gaelic and to create practical opportunities for its use.
The Dundee plan contains a series of high level aims and actions to be progressed over the next five years, to increase the visibility of Gaelic in public life; expand learning opportunities; support Gaelic arts, culture, and events; and work with partners to strengthen Gaelic locally.
Views on the draft plan are invited from Gaelic speakers and learners, community groups, cultural organisations, education partners, and anyone who values Dundee’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
The consultation will run from 19 January to 27 February. An online form is available via the Council’s Consultation Hub, along with Frequently Asked Questions.
Paper copies are also available, and drop-in sessions will be held at The Central Library on 4 February 2026 from 12pm to 2pm; and Menzieshill Community Centre on 23 February 2026 from 3pm to 5pm.
Council leader Mark Flynn said: “I’d encourage any individual or group with an interest in Gaelic to share their views on the draft plan.
“Gaelic has been part of Dundee’s heritage for over 1000 years and continues to be part of our city today including Gaelic language classes, the Gaelic Choir and signage across the city having Gaelic translations.
“Together, we can ensure that Gaelic continues to enrich Dundee - celebrating our past, strengthening our present and inspiring our future.”
The findings of the consultation will be part of a report submitted to Bòrd na Gàidhlig. This document will be published on the Council website.
