New Planters at City Square with LEZ Investment

Dundee’s City Square has seen a series of new planters installed enhancing the area, following an investment of £93,000 from the Council’s Low Emission Zone funds.

New shrubs, plants and trees have all been planted as part of the improvements making the space greener and more attractive while supporting biodiversity.

Revenue generated through enforcement of the Low Emission Zone was earmarked for city centre greening measures with the aim of benefiting residents, visitors, business as well as the public realm.

As part of the works, the trees from previous planters at the Square have been carefully retained and will be replanted at locations elsewhere in the city.

Council Leader Cllr Mark Flynn said: “The Low Emission Zone was brought in to decrease harmful emissions and improve air quality creating a healthier and greener environment for the city centre.

“I am very glad to see this additional revenue stream put to good use in the City Square, bringing colour and supporting the environment for everyone who takes in the space.

“By investing LEZ penalty charge income in this way, we are putting investment directly into a popular area within the city centre.

“We all want to see Dundee’s city centre as an attractive destination and appearance always plays an important role in that.

“We are ambitious about the city centre and continue to work closely with many stakeholders on new ways to make the area as appealing as possible.”
