Hello and welcome to my End of Month Blog #27 as the Lord Provost of Dundee.

August has been a quieter month for me as Lord Provost and in this time, I have also used my social media channels to highlight the other duties that come with my role.

This includes acting as the Lord Lieutenant of Dundee, Armed Forces Champion, Convener of the City Council Committee, Honorary Presidencies and President (by rotation) of the Black Watch Association. I also informed regarding my Twin Cities duties and Consular duties as Lord Provost.

Activities over August included:

  • On Thursday 1st, there was the installation of Dundee’s 2024 Citizens of the Year Lesley Nicoll and her late husband Phil Welsh;
  • On Thursday 8th, Bailie Helen Wright attended the Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education Graduation Ceremony;
  • On Saturday 10th, Bailie Christina Roberts was present for the Dundee Sea Cadets’ 85th anniversary as they undertook a Parade in the City Centre;
  • A Civic Reception was hosted by Bailie Helen Wright on Wednesday 14th for the St Andrew’s First Aid Volunteers Recognition Presentations for Long Service;
  • On Thursday 15th, I was delighted to meet up with the Deputy Mayor of Würzburg Martin Heilig to discuss Twin City activities between Dundee and Würzburg;
  • As part of my duties as Lord Provost, I am the Convener of the City Council Committee which met for the first time in a hybrid fashion in the City Chambers on Monday 19th August;
  • The International Association for Research in Economic Psychology (IAREP) – Society for Advancement of Behavioural Economics (SABE) Conference took place in Dundee on Tuesday 20th in which a speech from myself was read out;
  • On Monday 26th, the International Phosphorus Workshop in conjunction with the Convention Bureau took place in which a speech from myself was read out;
  • On Wednesday 28th, Deputy Lieutenant David Dorward took two Citizenship Ceremonies in Committee Room 1;
  • On Thursday 29th, I had the pleasure of meeting former Dundee Citizen of the Year Raymond Edwards and his family guests over from Canada. We had a chat and took some photos on the Civic Balcony overlooking City Square;
  • Also on Thursday 29th, Bailie Christina Roberts attended the SSAFA Annual General Meeting at Oliver Barracks;
  • On Friday 30th, a Choir delegation from Viesite, Latvia visited the city and were hosted by Bailie Helen Wright as part of a civic event;
  • Also on Friday 30th, a Civic Reception took place with Bailie Christina Roberts to recognise the exceptional contributions of Margaret Mather MBE in the area of musical theatre in the city spanning many decades.

My thanks to Bailie Helen Wright, Bailie Christina Roberts, and Deputy Lieutenants David Dorward and Jill Shimi for taking a number of events in August. I am very grateful.
