Dundee has marked International Women’s Day with a show of solidarity in the City Chambers between local organisations, partners and stakeholders.

International Women's Day has been happening for over 100 years and aims to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The theme for this year is 'Inspire Inclusion’ highlighting the significance of diversity and empowerment across all sectors of society.

Dundee City Council recently awarded a grant to the Dundee International Women’s Centre through its Equality & Diversity Fund to help support its events at the Dundee Women’s Festival.

The annual Dundee Women’s Festival is an event that celebrates the women of Dundee past and present with a wide range of activities for all to enjoy. It’s an opportunity to learn, discuss issues, encourage others, make new friends and also find out about the women who have contributed to the history of Dundee. A full programme of events is available of the Dundee Women’s Festival website.

Dundee City Council Equalities Spokesperson Councillor Nadia El-Nakla said: “I was delighted to invite so many inspirational women and organisations to join me in the City Square today, to mark International Women’s Day. The contribution of women to our city should be recognised as it is inspiring and impactful.

“The council and its partners are working hard to break down the barriers that exist for women in Dundee, but there is still much more that needs to be done.

“Today is a chance to celebrate the achievements and successes of women, past and present. International Women’s Day is also a time to reflect on the struggle facing so many women across the globe.

“For example, in Gaza, women are having c-sections without anaesthetic and have no milk to feed their babies. I am reminded of the quote by the famous activist Coretta Scott King, she said ‘freedom & justice cannot be parcelled out in pieces to suit political convenience. I don't believe you can stand for freedom of one group of people and deny it to others'.”

If you are experiencing sexual violence/domestic abuse or are at risk you can find support on the Dundee Violence Against Women Website.
