Dundee Green Events Code of Practice

Dundee City Council has become one of only two Scottish local authorities helping local events reduce their environmental impact through a groundbreaking pilot project.

The Green Events Code of Practice (GECoP), published by Vision for Sustainable Events and supported by LIVE and the Purple Guide, is an industry-developed set of national sustainable event management guidelines for event organisers, local authorities, environmental organisations and the supply chain.

The GECoP is available to all event organisers in the city offering the opportunity to explore their sustainability score and encourages more sustainable event practices.

Climate, Net Zero & Environment Convener Cllr Lynne Short said “The code of practice operates on a voluntary basis, with it giving the Council a valuable way to review how events are delivered across the city.

“It helps us better understand how venues are performing and assesses key factors such as power supply, water use, and waste management, while strengthening collaboration with the events community.

“The delivery of sustainable events is key in the success of Dundee’s Climate Action Plan and achieving net zero city-wide by 2045.”

WestFest organisers Jillian and Lucy said: "As we continue working towards a greener Westfest, the Tool has helped us better understand our environmental impact and identify opportunities for improvement.

“We're pleased to support the Green Events Code of Practice and the positive difference it can make across Dundee's events sector."

The Green Events Code of Practice commits to a 50% reduction of carbon emissions by 2030 and a total reduction by 2050 at the latest.

More information about the Green Events Code of Practice and the GECoP Toolkit are available online.

Event organisers in Dundee are encouraged to complete the tool and share their results with the Council’s Sustainability team by emailing sustainability@dundeecity.gov.uk.
