Hello, and welcome to my End of Month Blog #19 as the Lord Provost of Dundee.

I hope you had a peaceful and joyful Christmas and on behalf of the Lady Provost and myself, I wish you and yours best wishes for the New Year.

Activities over the past month included:

  • On Friday 1st, I was given the great privilege of officially opening the Radio 1’s Big Weekend Experience Exhibition along with Head of Radio 1 Aled Haydn Jones at V&A Dundee which went out live on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, with Greg James having broadcast their show live all week from outside the V&A in our city;
  • The 21st Scots Trads Music Awards took place at the Caird Hall on Saturday 2nd. Depute Lord Provost Kevin Cordell hosted a Civic Event in the City Chambers ahead of the main event;
  • On Wednesday 6th, I accepted Braeview Academy’s invitation to attend the school’s Polar Academy launch at the V&A Dundee. I wish the school all the best after it was selected to work with The Polar Academy with ten pupils traveling to Greenland in 2024;
  • Later on Wednesday 6th, the Lady Provost and I attended an event at University House marking 2023 following an invitation from Professor Iain Gillespie, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee;
  • I attended the Harris Academy Christmas Carol Service on Thursday 7th which took place at Logie St John’s Church in the West End of the city. This was a superb Christmas event and one of a number of Harris Academy events put on during the build-up to the festive holidays;
  • On Tuesday 12th, the Lady Provost and I attended the High School of Dundee Winter Concert at the Caird Hall. It was great to see an excellent attendance supporting the school pupil’s superb musical performances;
  • On Saturday 16th, the Lady Provost and I attended a performance of ‘The Little Mermaid’ at the Dundee Ice Arena. We have been fortunate to have attended these performances for a number of years and this year’s Ice Show was yet another outstanding and amazing performance full of music, great costumes and fantastic skill;
  • I was very glad to be invited along to a Celebration of Christmas at Menzieshill Parish Church by the Salvation Army Dundee Church and Community Centre. The event took place on the evening of Sunday 17th and included music from the Dundee Instrumental Band and the Salvation Army Chorus & Timbrels;
  • On Tuesday 19th, the Lady Provost and I attended the Dundee Sea Cadets Christmas Divisions Parade on board HMS Unicorn. As Honorary President and Lord Provost, I was delighted and honoured to attend this superb event and I thoroughly enjoyed the inspections, music and the prizegiving;
  • It was an honour to welcome Bishop Andrew Swift in for a chat to the Twinning Room on the Civic Floor on Wednesday 20th;
  • Following on from the meeting with Bishop Andrew Swift, on Christmas Eve the Lady Provost and I attended the Midnight Mass at the Cathedral Church of St Pauls Dundee for the service with Bishop Andrew Swift and the Very Reverend Dr Elizabeth Thomson with an excellent choir singing carols and the lovely service taking us into Christmas Day.

For updates as they occur, you can find the latest Lord Provost news and activities on both Facebook and Twitter/X.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Blog and I hope to update you further on my civic responsibilities in the next edition which will summarise my activity in January 2024.
