Tributes Paid to Councillor Charlie Malone
30/07/24Tributes are being paid to Dundee City Councillor Charlie Malone, who has passed away at the age of 63.
Political group leaders on the council and chief executive Greg Colgan are passing on their condolences to his family and friends.
Councillor Malone, who was also a lecturer at Abertay University, had represented Labour in the Lochee ward since 2017.
He had also served on the board of trustees of Dundee Contemporary Arts and was a trustee of Leisure & Culture Dundee.
Bailie Kevin Keenan, leader of the Labour group on Dundee City Council, said: “We are deeply saddened at the passing of our friend and colleague Councillor Charlie Malone.
“Charlie was a lifelong campaigner for equality, justice and peace. He loved the community of Lochee, in which he and his beloved family were raised and which he proudly served with passion and diligence.
“He was offended by poverty wherever he found it. His prominent and proud role in the Timex dispute was about standing up for, and shoulder to shoulder with, his fellow worker – which he did all his life. We will miss him sorely.”
Councillor John Alexander, leader of the administration and SNP group leader, said: “The city is richer for Charlie's contributions, support and constructive challenge over the years. His family, I know, will be rightly proud of his legacy in Lochee and across Dundee - from Timex to the council.
“He always stayed true to his strongly held beliefs, particularly on social justice. He was a genuine, passionate and caring man - a true gent.
“Charlie was a friend, colleague and ambassador for the city. And someone that everyone held in high regard. My group and I are deeply saddened by his passing.”
Bailie Fraser Macpherson, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said: “The members of our group on Dundee City Council are very saddened to learn the news of the passing of Councillor Charlie Malone.
“Charlie was held in the highest regard by all members of the council – a hard-working and able councillor for the people of Lochee, whose residents he represented with distinction.
“He always spoke with passion and eloquence. We will all miss Charlie greatly – one of the good guys, liked and respected by all.”
Bailie Derek Scott, Conservative councillor, said: “I was so sorry to learn that Charlie had passed away. He was a man of steadfast political values that he articulated to great effect in the City Chambers.
“I admired his dedication to Lochee and the way he spoke up for the people of the area. He has been taken from us far too soon and will be greatly missed.”
Council chief executive Greg Colgan said: “I was saddened to hear of the death of Councillor Malone, as I know officers across the council were too.
“He was a passionate and articulate politician who worked daily with colleagues across the Council to improve the lives of people in Lochee and Dundee.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to Cllr Malone’s family and friends. The thoughts of the entire Council are with them at this sad time.”
