New Scottish Youth Parliament representatives elected in Dundee
12/12/23The young people representing Dundee at the Scottish Youth Parliament have been revealed.
4 young people have been elected to represent young people across the city.
Kristers Lukins and Leia Mckenzie have been elected to represent Dundee West and Jamail Umar and Jack Anderson have been elected to represent Dundee East.
The successful candidates will act as MSYP Elects until Thursday 1st February 2024 when they will transition to Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament as their new membership term begins.
Following this, MSYPs will then undergo a period of training and development in early 2024 before going on to select their National Campaign Priorities for the 2024/25 term.
Since 1999, MSYPs have successfully campaigned for change for Scotland’s children and young people in their mission to make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up.
Previous campaign successes have included free bus travel, protecting young people’s rights by campaigning to bring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into Scots law, and calling for 16 and 17 years old to be able to vote in all Scottish elections.
Children, Family and Communities Convener Stewart Hunter said: “Becoming involved in the Scottish Youth Parliament is an incredible way for young people passionate about driving change in their local communities to make a difference, on both a local and national scale.”
“MSYPs represent our views in the Scottish Youth Parliament. They ensure that young voices are heard and that the issues that affect young people are highlighted to decision makers, so that no decision for you, is made without you.”
Dundee MSYPs will be supported locally in their role by Dundee City Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) Youth Voice team staff and are part of the youth led Dundee Youth Council (DYC) which encourages young people to have their voices heard locally on issues that affect them.
