Efforts to Improve Dundee Road Safety
15/08/23Efforts to further improve road safety in Dundee will be discussed by councillors.
The Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee is to consider the council’s annual road safety and 20mph progress report.
It will show that over £1 million will be invested in road safety measures as well as into cycling, walking and safer routes across the city in the next year to provide improvements for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The annual report shows progress the council is making towards national Scottish Government targets set for 2030 and 2050.
Councillors will hear that in in 2022 there were no fatalities on Dundee’s roads, but there has been a rise in casualties compared to 2021. The number of casualties overall is still lower than 2020.
Committee convener Councillor Steven Rome explains that the council is doing all it can do to reduce casualties in the long term.
He said: “The council is absolutely committed to improving road safety in the city and ensuring that as few people are injured as possible.
“We are in no way complacent, and this report illustrates the measures we continue to take across the city.
This ranges from the extension of 20mph Zones to looking at the need for more pedestrian crossings.
“Bringing in measures that are proven to improve road safety are therefore a vital part of our work.
“What we have been doing is helping to protect people from serious injury and death and we will keep doing it until our roads are as safe as they can possibly be.”
Councillors will also hear that a new process to assess the need for pedestrian crossings is now in place and the following locations will be considered:
• Balgillo Road/Forthill Road;
• Kings Cross Road/Dunsinane Avenue;
• Craigie Drive/Craigiebarn Road;
• Macalpine Road/St Leonards Place; and
• Laird Street at Craigowl Primary School.
Meanwhile, as part of the agreed roll out of 20mph limits the Mains of Claverhouse area, Craigiebank Sheltered Housing Complex and the Denhead of Gray area are programmed to start this financial year. Albany Terrace/The Law, Kirkton, St Marys; Mid Craigie, Gotterstone; and the Willows/Ormiston Crescent area are progressing through the Traffic Regulation Order process.
Currently, 30% of the road network identified for 20mph in Dundee is now within a 20mph zone and this will increase to approximately 45% when the 2024/2025 areas are implemented.
The remaining roads will be assessed and future 20mph zones will be brought forward subject to resources.
The report will be considered by the Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee on Monday August 21.
