Garden Maintenance Scheme

Garden Maintenance is a basic grass cutting service to assist the elderly and individuals with a disability to keep their garden tidy. This service is available to people who do not live in sheltered housing areas, (as these areas are already maintained). Our grass cutting season runs from April - October then finishes towards the end of March. The following service offer is:

  • 15 cut and lift of the grass areas, shrub beds edged (where required) and weeds spot treated (hoeing and tidy the borders is not included.)
  • 2 hedge cuts and remove all cuttings.
  • 7 occasions of weed killing to hardstanding areas (paths, driveways etc.) as required.

The garden maintenance booking system opens in early January and closes on 31st March.

To be eligible everyone in the household must be:

  • DCC tenants aged 16 - 74 and have proof of disability via DLA/PiP/ADP/Attendance Allowance
  • DCC tenants over 75 – no proof of disability required

If there are other tenants who reside at the property who do not meet the above criteria the service will not be available. Proof of disability listed below is required to be submitted with the application:

  • Attendance Allowance – including rate
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) – including rate
  • Personal Independent Payment (PiP) - including rate
  • Adult Disability Payment – including rate.

This is a “means tested” service for council tenants only.

To receive the service free of charge you must be in receipt of:

  • a means tested benefit
  • Council Tax Reduction (CTR)
  • Housing Benefit (HB)

If no means tested benefits are applicable, we would assess the maintenance required in the garden and offer an estimated cost for the season.

Each application and accompanying documentation will be assessed. Disability proof is required for everyone over the age of 16 up to 74 years of age who are connected with the household.

Owner occupiers, private tenants including private housing association tenants can apply (capacity dependant) for a payable service. Again, charges will be advised based on the size, content, and condition of the garden the applicant is responsible for.

Please call 01382 434708 to register for an application form, and, where appropriate, an initial telephone assessment of eligibility will be carried out.
