What is the Electoral Register?

The electoral register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You must be on the register to vote at elections. You are not automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax. You can register to vote at any time. The deadline to register to vote for the upcoming by-elections is Tuesday 17th September 2024.

Who can register to vote?

Persons eligible to be registered are:

    To vote in local elections you have to be 16 or over and be

    • a British Citizen 
    • Irish Citizen 
    • A qualifying Commonwealth citizen or qualifying foreign national (i.e. you have leave to enter or remain in the UK or don’t require leave to enter or to remain in the UK) permanently living in the UK

    Am I registered to vote?

    How do I register to vote?

    If you are not registered or if you have recently moved house you can make an application to register.

    Where do I vote?You will receive a poll card and your polling place is detailed on it. You can also use the "Services Near Me" on the home page.

    I won't be here on Polling Day so can I vote by post or have someone else vote on my behalf?

    Yes, but there are deadlines. For full details and forms for Proxy Voting or Voting By Post, check the 'How to Vote' page.  

    The last day for receipt of absent voting cancellation/amendments to existing postal voters and proxy applications and new applications to vote by post is Wednesday 18th September (5pm).

    Do I need photo ID to vote at this election?

    You will not need photo ID for local council elections or Scottish Parliament elections. You only need this for the UK General Election.
