Bikehangar Rollout Steps Up a Gear to Meet Demand

Residents across the city will soon benefit from 13 new Bikehangars, increasing Dundee's secure on-street cycle parking provision by over 30%.

Due to significant demand Dundee City Council has sought funding through Transport Scotland's Tier 2 Fund who have provided £55,900 to fund and install the new Bikehangars.

These new Bikehangars will be installed at Stephen’s yard, Seafield Lane, Peddie Street, Brewery Lane, Blackness Street, North Ellen Street, Kinghorne Road, Crichton Street, Thorter Way, Park Avenue, Eden Street, Lyon Street, and Fort Street.

Spaces are available to rent for just £11 per year, a significantly reduced amount from the standard annual cost of £72. This subsidised rate has been made possible through £12,200 of funding from Tactran's People and Place Fund and £3,965 from Transport Scotland's Local Authority Direct Award Fund, ensuring the facilities remain affordable and accessible.

City Growth and Infrastructure convener, Cllr Steven Rome said: "I welcome this investment, which reflects the growing demand for secure cycle parking and supports our commitment to encouraging active travel across Dundee.

“The waiting lists for some of our Bikehangars show just how popular they have become. While that's encouraging, it also highlights the need to continue expanding our network. Supporting active travel is a key priority for the Council, and expanding access to secure cycle storage is an important part of that commitment."

Depute Convener and transport lead, Cllr Siobhan Tolland said: “We have listened to residents' feedback and carefully identified locations where these new Bikehangars will have the greatest benefit for local communities.

“I was particularly delighted to hear that these spaces will be available at a heavily subsidised rate. Keeping the cost low will make secure cycle storage accessible to more people, especially those who might not otherwise be able to afford this type of facility, helping remove one of the barriers to choosing cycling for everyday journeys.”

Dundee currently has 40 on-street residential Bikehangars, each providing secure storage for up to 6 bicycles. These facilities offer a convenient and secure storage solution for residents who do not have suitable space at home, helping to protect their bikes from theft and the elements. They also support and encourage active travel by making cycling a more practical alternative to using the car.

Having a safe, dry place to store my bike near my front door means I can choose it instead of the car for short trips into town, saving money and reducing emissions.
