New Community-Based Adult Learning Directory launched

A new online directory showcasing community-based adult learning (CBAL) opportunities throughout Dundee has now been launched.
The directory categorises activities into four main levels, ranging from drop-in sessions and informal engagements to more structured adult learning classes.
Across Dundee there is significant emphasis on early engagement and accessible entry points for learners, with most opportunities being free or low cost.
The directory was developed by Dominic Nelson, a pupil at Harris Academy, during an internship through Career Ready with Dundee City Council's Communities Service.
Dominic's Career Ready supervisor, Kirsty Forrester, shared, "We tasked Dominic with creating an online directory based on the CBAL network's mapping exercise. It had to be cost-free, utilise existing software, and be completed within a month."
Prior to starting his internship, Dominic began his Advanced Higher Computing Course, where he learned to automate online processes. He applied this knowledge to develop a system that allows CBAL providers to add and remove opportunities, ensuring the directory remains up-to-date.
Users can sort the directory by type of activity, stage of activity, organisation, ward, or hours of learning. Additionally, a printable programme outline is available, providing further details on the adult learning opportunities and referral information.
Convener of Children, Families and Communities Cllr Stewart Hunter said: “Community based adult learning makes a huge contribution to fulfilling our ambitions for Dundee, helping people to develop new skills, connect as well as promote health and wellbeing.
“I am very pleased to see the value this new resource will bring to many across the city who can access it just now from the Council’s website. Dominic has done a tremendous job in developing the resource and it is very positive to see one of our own pupils using their skills like this.”
Anne Leslie, Chair of the Dundee CBAL Network from DVVA, commented, "This resource will be a tremendous asset to adult learning providers within and beyond our network. The ability to search for opportunities will make finding provision so much easier, and we can share opportunities instantly with an online form."
The new Dundee Community Based Adult Learning Directory can be accessed from the Dundee City Council website.
