Delivering on the Dundee Promise

The positive impact of various efforts to improve support to vulnerable children and young people as part of delivering on 'The Dundee Promise,' is being highlighted.

The Children, Families, and Communities Committe will review the annual progress report of the 'Our Promise to Care Experienced Children, Young People and Care Leavers 2023-26.'

In the 12 months of this new plan the number of care experienced young people reduced from 429 to 386, while the use of residential care dropped from 43 young people to 18.

In addition, no young people have been admitted to secure care restricted accommodation for 18 months.

The report also highlights positive developments in education, with more care-experienced young people achieving qualifications, including one or more SCQF Level 4 and 5 awards.

Out of a total of 29 actions in the plan, work has started on 26 of them, 12 of which have already been completed and 14 have made significant progress.

Looking ahead to the next phase of the plan, the service will focus on several key areas, including maximizing benefits for kinship carers, leading a review of fees and allowances for foster carers to align with neighboring authorities, and redesigning services to better support families.

Depute Convener of Children Families, and Communities Roisin Smith said: "This is an important update that highlights the excellent work across the council to support our care experienced young people and those that care for them.

"The report really illustrates the breadth of support across the council, such as the ‘Hello in there wee one’ which supports vulnerable mothers to form positive attachments with their babies.

"We know there is still more work to be done in a number of areas such as reducing the number of babies and infants subject to a formal Child Protection process and increasing the number of foster carers in the city.

"A great deal of work goes into supporting our care experienced children, young people, and carers, and I want to thank the teams that work together to achieve better outcomes for some of the most vulnerable people in the city."

The Children, Families and Communities Committee will meet on Monday 28th October.
