A drive to increase the number of 20 MPH zones across Dundee in an ongoing safety campaign will be considered by councillors on Monday (August 19).

The annual road safety report and 20 MPH progress report will also outline how almost £1.5 million is proposed for improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

These include road markings and traffic signs, junction improvements and pedestrian crossings across 2024-26.

Councillors will hear that 33% of the road network identified for 20mph in Dundee is now within a 20mph zone and this will increase to approximately 45% when the 2025/2026 areas are implemented.

The report shows progress the council is making towards national Scottish Government road safety targets set for 2030 and 2050.

The Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Commitee on Monday August 19 will be told that the number of road casualties in 2023 on the local road network shows a reduction of 8% when compared to the previous year.

Committee convener Councillor Steven Rome explains that the council is continuing to work with partner organisations doing all it can do to improve road safety and reduce casualty figures casualties in the long term.

He said: “The council is absolutely committed to improving road safety in the city and ensuring that as few people are injured as possible. This requires a multi-agency approach to improving road layouts, educating road users, and enforcing traffic laws.

“We are in no way complacent, and this report illustrates the measures we continue to take across the city. This ranges from the extension of 20mph Zones to introducing more pedestrian crossings.

“There is also extensive work ongoing in our schools to teach children road safety lessons.

“The measures planned aim to reduce the number and severity of road accidents however everyone has a part to play in achieving this, whether that be driving safely, ensuring vehicles are well maintained, or being alert to other road users. Enforcement by Police Scotland is also crucial in maintaining road safety.”
