The Community Learning and Development Team (CLD) received the highest grading following a recent progress visit.

The Children, Families and Communities Committee will hear that following Education Scotland’s Community Learning & Development Progress Visit the leadership of CLD is strong and effective and there were no areas identified for improvement.

It praised the team for enabling community members and young people to be active participants in decision-making processes and highlighted that their voices are heard and valued by council officers, elected members and key partners.

In addition, the report showed that the CLD partnership approach to tackling poverty is highly effective.

Furthermore, new Scots are much more integrated into the community and have an increasing support network because of the Dundee English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) and humanitarian partnerships.

Levels of attainment at Craigie High school are starting to improve partly due to the close partnership work with CLD staff and the school community. Similarly, the partnership with Braeview Academy is resulting in positive outcomes for many young people.

Adult literacy learners are benefiting from one to one or group work support that meets their individual needs. Progression routes for learners are clear and a few are progressing towards qualifications, volunteering or to college.

Children, Families and Communities Convener Stewart Hunter said: “This report really highlights the great work that the Community Learning and Development team carries out and the impact this has on the local community.

“I’m delighted that the team will now get an opportunity to share this work across Scotland and enable others to replicate the really valuable work they carry out.”

The Children, Families and Communities Commitee will meet on the 13 May.
