Hello and welcome to my End of Month Blog #21 as the Lord Provost of Dundee.

I’ve met many wonderful people while undertaking my duties this month covering a wide array of activities and the attending of events.

Activities over the past month included:

  • On Monday 5th February, I had a meeting with Councillor Mark Flynn –Convener of the Council’s Neighbourhood Regeneration, Housing & Estate Management Committee. I thank Cllr Flynn for his time and was glad to cover a wide variety of topics;
  • I welcomed Emma Forbes, who was in Dundee through the Kanzen Exchange Programme, to the Civic Floor on Tuesday 6th. Kanzen Karate have been hosting Emma for a month from South Africa as part of her internship;
  • On Wednesday 7th, I met with Councillor Lynne Short and we had an excellent discussion on a wide array of matters;
  • On the 7th, I also visited a Friends of Wighton lunchtime recital musical event at the Wighton Centre in Dundee Central Library. I was delighted to attend and support the event and thought the music of Aandowin was stunning. I hope to hear them again soon;
  • On what was a busy day, I also attended the University of Dundee Founders Report at the Dalhousie Building;
  • On Thursday 8th, I was delighted to welcome five students from the University of Dundee on Robertson Trust Scholarships accompanied by three University of Dundee staff to the Twinning Room. The students are at various stages of their respective degrees and I wish them every success going forward;
  • I gave a Civic Reception for Dundee’s 2020 Citizen of the Year Samantha Bruce on the evening of Friday 9th. I was delighted to present Samantha with her framed certificate and medal to recognise her outstanding services to the Dundee community;
  • On Saturday 10th, I attended the Edinburgh Chinese New Year Concert at the capital’s Usher Hall. This was a spectacular event with many superb performers showcasing their abilities;
  • I attended the Dundee Science Centre on Monday 12th after I was honoured to be invited to cut the ribbon to officially open the Dundee Science Festival with the assistance from some Primary 6 pupils from Rosebank Primary School;
  • On Friday 16th, the Lady Provost and I attended the Dundee Rotary Charity Gala Dinner. There are many organisations in our city raising funds and helping various Dundee groups and citizens who may be in need of assistance in some way and in this area, the Rotary Club of Dundee play such an important role in the city;
  • The Lady Provost and I attended the Chinese New Year Festival 2024 in Glasgow on Sunday 18th taking in an event in George Square joining a large attendance who were entertained by a display of dragons and small fireworks. Following the display in the George Square, we attended a superb show at the Glasgow City Chambers;
  • On Wednesday 21st, I had a discussion with Cllr Steven Rome. Steven and I then went on to have a meeting in the Twinning Room on the Civic Floor with the Dundee Chinese School;
  • I was delighted to present the brand-new Lord Provost of Dundee STEM Inspiration Award in the morning of Friday 23rd to the award winner and the runner-up as part of this year’s Dundee Science Festival. I want to congratulate Lorraine Lemon (Head of Business Development at the Dundee Science Centre) and her team for another successful festival;
