Eilish McColgan Opens New Sports Facility
22/01/242022 Commonwealth Games Champion Eilish McColgan opened a new multi-use sports facility.
This new all-weather sports pitch has been built for pupils at Camperdown and St Clements Primary School and can be used primarily for football and running/athletics.
Over £200,000 was spent on 3G artificial surface, sports equipment, and a running track.
It is hoped the new facility will improve pupils' health and wellbeing, by allowing the Active Schools Assistant to carry out targeted wellbeing interventions and offer more creative approaches to improving pupil’s overall health.
The space also supports holiday activities with School and Family Development Workers and with our community partners.
The sports facility, officially opened by Eilish McColgan who is the 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000 meters champion, 5000 meters silver medallist and four-time European Championships medallist, will also be open for members of the community to use.
Children, Families and Communities Depute Convener Roisin Smith said: “I am delighted that our young people at Camperdown and St Clement’s have this new sports facility.
“We know how important it is for pupils to be able to get outside and get active and this new facility means that generations of pupils will be able to do that all year round and in all weather.
“This new space will allow the schools to promote Health and wellbeing right across the curriculum. I know there has been a demand for this locally and it is great to see it open for everyone to make use of.
“Sport is hugely beneficial, and we are committed to working with partners to improve access to great sporting facilities such as this for our young people and local communities.
“I want to thank Eilish for coming along today and opening this facility, I know this will mean a lot to all the pupils today to see such a celebrated and successful sports star.”
Commonwealth Campion, Eilish McColgan added: “Looking forward to catching up with all the youngsters and opening up the brand new all weather pitch.
“What a luxury for schools to have. It's great to see facilities continuing to be upgraded to ensure youngsters have the opportunities they deserve.”
This recent facility represents a crucial aspect of our strategy for Physical Education, Physical Activity, and Sports (PEPAS), in accordance with the priorities set forth in the Dundee Partnerships Physical Activity Strategy.
Central to this strategy is Dundee's commitment to delivering, sustaining, and advancing facilities that are more accessible and of higher quality, catering to individuals across all levels of sports engagement.
