Dundee Pupils Hit the Pedal

All of Dundee Primary Schools have geared up for Bikeability 2.

This means that all primary schools in Dundee continue to receive on-road cycle training.

Pupils have been taught to start and stop, pass stationary vehicles parked on a road, understand the roads, and share the road with other vehicles.

Fair Work, Economic Growth, and Infrastructure Convener Councillor Steven Rome said: “The council first set up an active travel project in 2017 when only three schools were attempting to provide cycle training and it’s great to be a position where all primary schools now have on the road cycle training.

“Through our active travel project, we are aiming to get kids to move more – by encouraging more initiatives for them to walk, scoot, and bike.

“Our work with our young people continues into the summer as we offer free holiday biking camps and work with secondary pupils to deliver bikeability level 3.”

Children, Families and Communities Convener Stewart Hunter said: “It’s great that all schools in Dundee have completed their bikeability 2 training.

“This programme offers independence and encourages our pupils to form a good habit for life. We are keen to make this city a better place for cycling and teaching our young people this skill is fundamental and gives them a great sense of confidence.”

Spokesperson for Culture, History and Sport Councillor Lynne Short added: “I'm delighted that so many of our bairns are learning to cycle safely in the city.

“Learning to cycle is such an important skill and opens so many doors for our young people and I hope this new skill will enable more bairns to cycle to school.”

This project is funded jointly by Cycling Scotland and Dundee City Council and delivered by Leisure and Culture Dundee.
