A historic Dundee print firm is looking to the future following the award of a business grant from Dundee City Council.

Winter and Simpson has received nearly £50,000 from the Dundee Business Growth and Innovation Fund, which supports growing city-based businesses through an allocation of £500,000 to the council from the Scottish Government Local Authority Covid Economic Recovery Fund.

Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure convener Cllr Steven Rome and depute convener Cllr Siobhan Tolland visited the firm’s Dunsinane Avenue premises to discuss the investment with managing director Kenny Simpson.

The grant has assisted with the costs for purchase of new machinery and equipment to enable the business to grow turnover and employment over the next three years.

Cllr Rome said: “It was great to have a tour of the premises and see exactly how the grant is helping in Winter and Simpson’s business planning.

“This historic firm is looking ahead to grow turnover and staffing for the future and we are glad to have been able to assist with this grant.”

Kenny Simpson, Managing Director, Winter and Simpson, said: “The Business Growth and Innovation grant has been critical in enabling us to rapidly expand into the packaging markets. Part of the funding was used to purchase a digital die cutting machine which allows us to output accurate packaging prototypes in minutes compared to this process previously taking days. We have already had great success in winning packaging contracts ranging from supermarket microwave sleeves all the way to custom boxes for engineering components.

“I’d like to thank Dundee City Council for awarding us this funding which will allow us to continue to grow the business and create further employment opportunities over the coming years.”

The city council’s Economic Growth Team has been working closely with Business Gateway Tayside to develop and manage the scheme.

Businesses are encouraged to bring forward proposals for funding underpinned by clear growth plans. There are currently a number of companies going through the business planning and grant application process.
