Active freeway concept designs
05/06/23PROGRESS on creating new high quality, inclusive and segregated active travel routes to/from Dundee city centre is continuing with the launch of further consultation.
Discussions on five more routes linking the city centre with communities across Dundee is underway, following engagement earlier this year on the active freeway proposals for Lochee Road.
Concept designs have been prepared and opinions are being sought on active freeways for Arbroath Road, Hawkhill/Perth Road, Harefield Road/Dens Road, Macalpine Road and Pitkerro Road.
Mark Flynn convener of the city development committee said: “A continuous network of easy to find and safe active travel routes connecting our communities to the city centre is vitally important and our commitment to their introduction remains undimmed.
“We need people who live in the communities, people who use the routes and anyone else affected by the proposals to get involved in this phase of consultation and discussion so that they can help to shape what comes next.”
The active freeway concept aims to encourage people to make their journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling by providing active travel infrastructure on high-demand travel routes.
Kevin Cordell the council’s cycling spokesperson added: “A network of active freeways will not only make a substantial positive contribution to the city’s health and wellbeing, it will help to achieve our wider climate commitments and further improve local air quality.”
Further technical design work and traffic modelling will be required to confirm the feasibility and deliverability of the proposals, informed by engagement with local people at key stages of the design process.
Funding for the consultation work surrounding the creation of the six active freeways across Dundee has come from TACTRAN and Dundee City Council.
