Lord Provost Bill Campbell Blog #11
12/05/23Hello, and welcome to my End of Month Blog #11 as the Lord Provost of Dundee.
It has been another varied month where I have had the privilege of seeing a number of worthwhile projects, events and initiatives up close.
I also took the time this month through my social media channels to continue to share information about the role of the Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant by explaining the Lord Provost’s duties as chair of the selection process for the city’s Citizen of the Year initiative.
Activities over the past month included:
- On Tuesday 4th, I welcomed the Guildry of Dundee Assessors to the City Chambers for their organisation’s dinner;
- I was invited by Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce to ‘A Tour of Tartan’ at the V&A on Thursday 6th, which gave me the opportunity to take in the amazing Tartan exhibition in a bit more detail;
- The following day on Friday 7th, I was honoured to present Jacqueline Campbell with a British Empire Medal in the City Chambers in a ceremony in front of a large invited audience. Jackie was recognised for her incredible fundraising efforts for local causes since 2007, including CHAS from 2016;
- A civic reception took place on Wednesday 12th for the Dundee Police Scotland Youth Volunteers. This also included their Awards ceremony and presentations;
- The 126th Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) took place at the Caird Hall on Monday 17th where I was asked to deliver an opening speech;
- Along with City Development Committee Convener Mark Flynn, I visited ScrapAntics within the Wellgate Centre to find out about some of the great work they are undertaking;
- In the morning of Friday 21st, I attended the Dundee Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club at the Ardler Community Centre. I had the honour of meeting all the Veterans who attended and understand they come along every month;
- Later on Friday, I was present at the Dundee Weavers’ Dinner at Verdant Works. I was honoured to be invited along and asked to say some words to everyone;
- On Wednesday 26th, I had the honour of being part of a very special occasion for local residents who gained their British Citizenship through an official ceremony which took part in one of the council’s Committee Rooms;
- In the morning of Thursday 27th, I attended the World Daily Mile Event taking place in the city’s Baxter Park with over 1,000 children reaching their mile target while having a great time;
- I hosted a civic reception in the City Chambers on the evening of Thursday 27th for the City of Dundee Burgess charity where I gave a welcome speech and spoke to a number of attendees;
- On Friday 28th, I attended an event at the Dalhousie Building at the University of Dundee entitled: “Ukrainians in Scotland: History & Culture”;
- In the evening of Friday 28th, I was present at Dens Park for Dundee’s final home match of the season.
For updates as they occur, the latest Lord Provost news and activities are available on both Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you for taking the time to read my Blog and I hope to update you further on my civic responsibilities in the next edition which will summarise my activity across May.
