Tackling Ash Dieback in the city

Dundee City Council Environment staff are leading a wide-scale surveying programme of the city’s ash trees on public land as part of an ongoing effort to monitor the impact of Ash Dieback.

Ash Dieback is a wind-borne fungal disease which spreads across native ash trees. Evidence has suggested that the issue could lead to the decline and death of the majority of ash trees in Scotland over the next two decades.

Councillors are to be updated on Ash Dieback in the city and the action being taken to tackle the disease when found in ash trees.

Neighbourhood Services Convener Councillor Heather Anderson said: “It’s very important that the issue of Ash Dieback is taken seriously and tackled appropriately.

“That’s why the council has established an interdisciplinary working group, set up a comprehensive survey system, identified in-house surveyors, developed an action plan and included the Ash Dieback tree disease in the council’s corporate risk register.

“The council’s Ash Dieback Action Plan focuses on the safety and environmental impacts of the decline of tens of thousands of young to mature ash trees within Dundee, on private or public land, affected by the issue.

“It’s also important that householders are aware of the disease and understand that they are responsible for any trees in their own garden.

“Our website signposts to information on spotting the initial signs of Ash Dieback but residents with unhealthy appearing ash trees in their garden should seek professional help to deal with the issue.”

More information about Ash Dieback, including a frequently asked questions, can be found on the Dundee City Council website.

The council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee will meet on Monday 9th January 2023.
