A call is being made for new carers to come forward and support some of the most vulnerable children and young people in Dundee, following β€œimpressive and inspiring” inspection reports on the city council’s adoption and fostering services.

The children and families service committee will hear details on Monday February 26 of two recent Care Inspectorate assessments.

Improved performance in the quality of care and support for the adoption service has been reported, alongside a range of positive findings.

Inspectors said that adopters reported feeling well supported through the process and that staff were β€œhighly motivated”.

Dundee’s fostering service also recorded an improved performance in care and support. Foster carers told inspectors they felt β€œvalued and proud” following a civic reception given in their honour.

Young people told the fostering service inspectors that:

β€œFoster care in Dundee is good and has made my life better”

β€œThey treat you well. I like it a lot. They make me feel safe and happy. I can talk to my foster carer when  I need help. Without foster care I don’t know what would happen”.

Meanwhile, the inspectors  heard from adopters who said:

β€œI have been very well supported through the (adoption) process and well prepared for what we have faced”

β€œBoth the child’s social worker and our worker (in the adoption service) have been a good source of support and guidance.”

The report to be considered by the committee also outlines how improvements will be taken forward for the future of the services.

Children and families service convener Councillor Gregor Murray said β€œThese are impressive and inspiring reports which reflect the hard work that is put in by our staff,

"They put in so much effort to help and support those who take the decision to become foster parents and adopters

"I would also like to express my gratitude to these families for what they do to look after some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities.

"We are always appealing for people to come forward to become foster carers or adoptive parents.

Anyone who is interested should call 01382 436060 as it could make a real difference to the lives of children in this city."
