The minute of meeting of this Committee of 17th February, 2003 was held as read.
Unless marked thus * all items stand delegated.
I STAIR LIGHTING IN TENEMENTS
There was submitted Agenda Note AN161-2003 on requests received from solicitors seeking evidence on behalf of clients who had injured themselves falling down unlit stairways in privately owned tenements and explaining that the Environmental and Consumer Protection Department had written to all prominent landlords known to the Department advising them that the owners of flats and private tenements with communal stair lighting systems run the risk of being sued if someone falls due to the lighting not working.
The Committee noted the action taken by the Department thereby encouraging landlords to take a more active approach to the maintenance and repair of the City's private tenements.
II PURCHASE OF LITTER BINS
There was submitted Report No 262-2003 by the acting Director of Environmental and Consumer Protection seeking authority to purchase litter bins for various locations throughout the City.
The Committee agreed to accept offers from specialist suppliers, Wybone Limited amounting to 1,574.30 and Glasdon UK Limited amounting to 12,806.80 for the supply of litter bins.
The Committee resolved under Section 50(A)(4) of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 that the public be excluded from the meeting for the undernoted item of business on the grounds that it would involve the likely disclosure of exempt information as defined in Paragraph 3 of Part I of Schedule 7(A) to the above Act.
III CIVIC GOVERNMENT (SCOTLAND) ACT, 1982 - SECTION 87(1) - BUILDINGS IN NEED OF REPAIR
There was submitted Agenda Note AN162-2003 reporting that notices had been served on owners of various properties requiring works to be carried out.
The Committee agreed that the acting Director of Environmental and Consumer Protection be authorised to carry out the works should the owners not comply within the time allowed in the notices.
NEIL GLEN, Convener.
