Take Pride in your City

It is easy and rewarding to get involved with Take Pride in Your City, there are already lots of things happening in Dundee that you can take part in.

Here are just a few examples of how to get involved.

• Take part in a local event. There's something for everyone from tree planting and gardening to litter picks and bird walks.  We would love to see photos taken at your local events, why not email them to us?
• Consider volunteering.  there are volunteering opportunities available whether you are interested in gardening, conservation, or working with community groups on a community project.  See some volunteering sessions on our events page or contact us to find out more.
• Join a local 'Friends' or community group.  There are lots of groups throughout Dundee who are always keen to have new members.
• Organise your own clean up.  Why not organise your own event and get your neighbours, friends or someone you know to join in.  See some 'hints and tips' below if you are organising your own clean up. The Council can help you by providing advice, litter picks and bags for your event and arrange uplift of the litter you collect.  We can also help you publicise your event, download a blank poster to advertise your event. You can also find out more about your local Litter Picking Hub in the drop down menu below.
• Become a Green Dog Walker.  This is a friendly, non-confrontational approach to changing attitudes towards dog fouling, if you are a dog walker who lives in Dundee and would like to get involved, please find out more on our Green Dog Walkers page.

First Steps

Promote your event and recruit more volunteers to take part in the clean up.

• Decide on a date and location for your clean up. This could be a local park, a favourite landmark or even a community space or drying green.
• Ask permission from the landowner or council responsible for the area that you want to clean up.
• Call Dundee City Council on 01382 433141 to discuss your plans and for more advice about how we can help you.
• Register your event with Clean Up Scotland. When you register your event you can order a FREE Clean Up kit which includes tabards, stickers and posters.
• Carry out a risk assessment for the event to identify potential hazards and any measures you need to put in place to make sure participants are safe.

The Council Can Help By

• Providing you with equipment such as litter picks and bags for your event and by arranging uplift of the litter that you collect.
• Helping you with a risk assessment for your clean up and offering advice on how to keep participants safe.
• Helping you publicise your event on our Take Pride in Your City website and posters.
• Providing information and advice.

At The Event

• Brief participants on how to stay safe during the event.
• Distribute equipment to participants ensuring they know how to use it safely and let them know where the drop off point is for the bags of litter.
• Ensure participants know when and where to meet again when you are finished.
• Most importantly - enjoy the event!

As part of Take Pride in Your City, the Council is working in partnership with local community organisations and Keep Scotland Beautiful to create a network of community Litter Picking Hubs across Dundee which will help support and empower communities to tackle local litter issues and link up with like-minded people in their local area. 

Each Hub is hosted by a different community organisation and will provide enough free litter picking equipment, including litter pickers, bag hoops and hi-vis vests, for up to ten people to carry out a litter pick. The following Hubs launched in April 2024, with more planned for the weeks ahead:

Let us know if you see an issue in your neighbourhood so we can deal with it quickly. We would like residents to work with us to make Dundee a clean place to live and work.

• Litter:  If litter is a problem in your area, then let us know by reporting a street sweeping or bin collection problem.
• Dog Fouling:  It is an offence for anyone responsible for a dog to not clean up after it has fouled in an open space. If you have witnessed a dog fouling incident in your area within Dundee, please contact the Animal Control Section, Email: animal.control@dundeecity.gov.uk, Tel: 01382 436285
• Graffiti: If you spot graffiti on walls or surfaces in your local area - let us know. Research has shown that the quicker graffiti is cleaned off the easier it is to remove.
• Fly-Tipping: If you witness fly-tipping or dumping in your area - let us know.
