The Improvement Act of 1871 was introduced to improve the built environment by introducing official regulation and building standards to counter the unplanned housing and industrial expansion that had gone on previously and had been a major factor in creating a polluted and squalid townscape.
The official records for buildings that have been approved for construction are:
- Burgh of Broughty Ferry – Register of Plans
- Burgh of Dundee – Register of Plans Approved
Broughty Ferry’s records from 14 June 1869 to 31 October 1913 are recorded in two separate sections of the one register.
Dundee’s records from 31 July 1871 to 06 July 1964 are recorded over 17 registers.
Following the Boundaries Act of 1913, the burgh of Broughty Ferry formally merged with Dundee on 05 November 1913. Building records for Broughty Ferry from that date are included in the Dundee Register of Plans Approved.
Copies of the microfiche drawings may be obtained from the City Development Department by Emailing the Copy Document Service. There is a fee for this service.
Archives also hold 5 original Burgh of Dundee – Register of Plans Disapproved plan books which show building designs that did not met the required building standards and were disapproved.
