Funding granted to improve numeracy in the city
06/09/24Four youth groups are to receive a funding boost of a share of over £50,000 to develop the numeracy skills of younger people.
The funding from the UK Government’s Multiply programme is to use everyday activities to improve young people’s confidence and ability to use their numeracy skills effectively in everyday life.
This round of funding will target young people between the ages of 16-24 who are not in school.
The successful applicants were Hot Chocolate Trust, Alexander Community Development, Front Lounge Ltd, and Kanzen Karate.
The projects produced innovative ideas for everyday activities such as sport, the fashion industry and construction as the way to develop young people’s knowledge and understanding of numeracy.
Roisin Smith, Depute Convenor of Children, Families and Communities said "Numeracy is part of everyday life with bills, shopping and budgeting, this funding will help our young people to tackle managing their finances and better prepare them as they head into adulthood.
"We will work with the voluntary sector to assist young people in our communities too as they gain the knowledge and understanding of the need for and use of numbers in everyday living.
"We were keen that the proposals would open opportunities for young people to develop their skills and I’m delighted to see a wide range of successful applications in Dundee.
"I looked forward to gaining feedback from the young people participating in these projects and see how it helps them going forward."
Successful projects are all due to start this month and most operate until the end of March 2025.
