Twelve hectares of climate-resilient woodlands have been planted within Dundee following the completion of a unique tree-planting project in the city.

The new native woodland areas have been added to the city’s Riverside Nature Park, Balgay Hill and space north of Brackens at Clatto.

The completed works, which included community tree planting days, will create new habitats for wildlife, provide a new resource for people as well as boost local climate resiliency which aligns with ambitions set out in the Dundee Climate Action Plan as well as the Biodiversity Action Plan.

Neighbourhood Services Convener Councillor Heather Anderson said: “This project has helped deliver a big boost to the number of trees we have within the city - something we always aim to get more of.

“The additional twelve hectares will help to increase our woodland diversity, increase our carbon storage which contributes the goals set out in the city’s Climate Action Plan, and is great for local wildlife which aligns with our ambitious Biodiversity Action Plan.

“The city has benefited from external funding to do this, and it expands the work we continue to do towards tree planting and to provide the wider public with positive outdoor spaces to take in.”

Councillors approved the plans at Dundee City Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee on Monday 9th January 2023 following a successful grant application made to the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund.
