A PROGRAMME to remove restrictive barriers at a dozen locations on the city’s active routes is well under way.

Designed to deter vehicles and enhance road safety when they were installed, the barriers are no longer fit for purpose,

Mark Flynn convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Working with cycling groups and individuals we have identified where access has become restricted, particularly for people who use wheelchairs, trikes and adapted bikes, and are in the process of removing these barriers.”

Kevin Cordell, the council’s cycling spokesperson, added: “Taking away these outdated forms of street furniture will have a big impact on making walking, wheeling and cycling more inclusive and allow better access to our neighbourhoods and green spaces.”

Most of the work is being carried out on the city’s Green Circular at eight locations including the western end of the Forfar Road bridge at Hebrides Drive, Drumgieth Road and at Explorer Rd in the Technology Park.

Barriers are also being removed in Balgay Park at the vehicle and pedestrian barrier underneath Balgay Bridge, on the path between Perth Road and Hazel Drive and at either end of the path between Roseangle car park and Greenmarket.
