Top Marks For City Compost16/08/18
For the tenth year in succession Dundee City Council has received PAS 100 Quality for its compost.
Discovery Compost, is produced by the council from garden waste that is put into brown bins and green waste produced from local parks and commercial landscapers.
Neighbourhood Services Convener Kevin Cordell said: “By achieving this high standard we are ensuing that the compost we produce is competitive in the market.
“Garden waste is an immensely valuable resource, by diverting it from our Energy from waste facility we are helping to reduce our carbon footprint as well as making a valuable end product.
“Not only does it reduce our carbon footprints, community groups and lock ups around the city benefit as they get this compost for free.”
Discovery Compost is certified to Publicly Available Specification 100 (PAS 100) standard which guarantees it is of a consistently high quality and is fit for purpose.
The standard covers the entire composting process from the raw materials through to how the finished product is labelled and means producers know they are making a quality product and buyers know they are receiving quality compost.
Kate Trehane, Community Allotment Officer said: “Tonnes and tonnes of Discovery compost have been used to make the community gardens in Dundee fertile.
“The Ardler community garden was constructed entirely using Discovery Compost and has been immensely productive for the last two years.
“The compost is invaluable and provides a cheap, reliable source without worrying about the carbon footprint inherent in both production and transport.”
