What's for Lunch? New School Menu Launched30/05/18
The new lunch menu for primary schools has been launched at Rowantree Primary
Dundee City Council children and families service convener Councillor Gregor Murray joined with pupils and the managing director of Tayside Contracts Iain Waddell to promote the menu for 2018-19.
With a skill on the Alexa app for ‘Tayside School Dinners’, young people and their families can instantly access details on what will be served at lunchtime. Pupils across Tayside were consulted during the menu design process and helped in trials. For this year, Tayside Contracts has worked to reduce the sugar content of the menu by withdrawing fruit juice and limiting desserts to three days out or five.
In a move to restrict the use of processed foods, 70% of the menu is prepared in-house. Tayside Contracts uses local suppliers where possible and products with full traceability and lower salt, fat and sugar than legislative specifications.
Councillor Murray said: “I am pleased to help at the launch of this menu and to highlight the real balance and choice that it contains.
“Nutrition and healthy eating play are an important component of the health and wellbeing education that our pupils take part in. These are extremely important lessons for life and I am pleased to hear that Rowantree pupils are relating their knowledge to the dinner menu which helps them to choose their options.
“It is important that we encourage children to eat healthily and to carry that habit with them in the future. I am also pleased to hear that the Alexa app is so popular and also allows pupils to see how technology can be applied to everyday uses in their lives.”
Iain Waddell said; “Our aim is to offer pupils a balanced menu with choice, andthrough education, empower them to make informed choices.
“We have a Food and Nutrition Co-ordinator who develops and analyses school menus to ensure they are nutritionally balanced, and who can also deliver healthy eating sessions and workshops in schools on request.
“Fruits and vegetables are added to as many dishes as possible, sometimes ‘hidden’, to provide an additional source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Unlimited salad is available daily. We intend to increase the visibility of the fruit and vegetables to promote healthier decision making once they leave primary school.”
