Visitors to Dundee City Square can try their hand at golf this weekend when a fun, free event will be held to celebrate the return of The Open to Carnoustie this summer.

The R&A, Dundee City Council, Angus Council and Carnoustie Golf Links have teamed up to bring golf to the heart of Dundee where local families and visitors of all ages can come and try a putt or two while learning about one of the world’s greatest sporting events. A number of qualified coaches will also be on hand to guide participants through the activities.

The event at Dundee City Square will be open from 10am-4pm on Saturday 27 January and staff will be available to provide more information about attending The 147th Open at Carnoustie from 15-22 July, including special ticket offers.

The Open’s Kids Go Free offer enables children under the age of 16 years to attend the Championship for free while Youth Tickets for those aged 16-24 years old include the option of free camping accommodation within walking distance of the famous Angus links. Anyone looking to attend The Open can also take advantage of early bird pricing until 31 January.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, said, β€œIt is important for us to engage with people of all ages in Tayside’s local communities to build anticipation and excitement ahead of The Open’s return to Carnoustie in July.

β€œWe will be encouraging families and friends visiting Dundee City Square to enjoy some golf and learn more about attending one of the world’s greatest sporting events where they can watch the game’s most talented golfers compete to lift the famous Claret Jug.”

Councillor Lynne Short, Dundee City Council city development convener, said, "The Open is a must-see Championship for millions of golf fans around the globe, so these ticketing deals are a tremendous opportunity for local families and young people to experience a world class sporting event on their doorstep.

"It is incredibly exciting that during this Year of the Young Person The R&A is recognising how transformational and important sports can be in building confidence, and understands that early adoption of sports in the young can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment.

"With our gateway destination credentials I am hopeful that many of those who come to the area spend time experiencing the attractions that have put Dundee and the surrounding area on the map in recent times."

Michael Wells, Chief Executive of Carnoustie Golf Links said, β€œCarnoustie is golf’s greatest challenge and we look forward to welcoming the best players to test themselves and compete for the game’s greatest prize.

β€œThis event in Dundee will provide a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to get involved and learn more about this iconic event and what’s to come in the Summer. We are very pleased to be able to provide support to The R&A in collaboration with Dundee City Council and Angus Council”

Cllr Ron Sturrock, Angus Council’s economy spokesperson said, β€œWe are fortunate in Angus to have one of the world’s greatest links courses on our doorstep and we are very excited to be welcoming The Open back to Carnoustie for the eighth time in July.

"The Open presents us with a global platform to showcase our wonderful region and we are looking forward to welcoming the many thousands of visitors who will descend upon us providing a significant and much welcomed boost to the local economy. Golfers of all ages and abilities are spoiled for choice in our area and we welcome any initiatives which encourage more people to take up the game.”

The 147th Open promotional event takes place in Dundee City Square from 10am until 4pm this Saturday (January 27). The event is free and open to all.
