III AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Reference was made to Article II of the minute of meeting of the City Council on 9th June, 2008 when Aung San Suu Kyi was granted the Freedom of the City of Dundee.

The Council approved the undernoted resolution:-

Dundee City Council has grave concerns about the unrest in Myanmar and, in particular, the treatment of the Rohingya people.

The State Counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi received the Freedom of the City in 2008. Dundee City Council asks the Lord Provost to write to Ms San Suu Kyi to use her position to bring an end to the unrest in Myanmar and protect the rights and freedoms of the Rohingya people.

Should Dundee City Council not receive a satisfactory response by 31st December, 2017, and the violence in Myanmar continues, then Dundee City Council will consider removing the Freedom of the City to Aung San Suu Kyi.

Lord Provost Ian BORTHWICK, Convener.
