II FREEDOM OF THE CITY - AUNG SAN SUU KYI
It was reported that this item had been placed on the agenda at the request of the Lord Provost.
After discussion, the Council resolved to confer the Freedom of the City on Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of BURMA (MYANMAR) and Head of the National League for Democracy. The Freedom was in recognition of her achievements in the service of democracy, which had merited the award of the Nobel Peace prize, and signified the Council's support for her immediate release and the restoration of democratic government in Burma.
In addition, the Council remitted to the Chief Executive to report on proposals for conferring this award, given that Aung San Suu Kyi remained under house arrest.
Lord Provost John R LETFORD, Convener.
