Grit Bins

Before the winter season starts all grit bins are filled in preparation for the coming winter. Grit bins are then refilled during winter weather events or in response to individual requests. 

During winter weather events grit bins are filled on a rolling basis across the city, this process takes a few days to cover the city and continues for the duration of the weather event plus an extra round of filling to make sure all bins are ready for the next spell of bad weather.  

Individual filling requests during weather events will be completed by the rolling filling programme. Outside of winter weather events they are completed as resources allow. You can request a grit bin to be filled by using “Report a Grit Bin Issue” link. 

If a grit bin is missing or damaged it can be reported using “Report a Grit Bin Issue” link. Reports will be investigated and actioned as resources allow. 

Report a Grit Bin Issue

Requests for new grit bins will be assessed against the current winter policy criteria before they are approved and set out. The winter policy targets new bins in sheltered housing areas, roads and footways that are on substantial gradients or bends that are not on priority footway gritting routes and no new grit bin will be provided should there be another grit bin present within 200m of the new location requested.
