Kerbside Recycling Box Scheme

Around 16,000 properties in Dundee are offered a 55 litre green box to help them recycle more of their household waste. The service has remained very popular since its introduction in 2005 and we are now pleased to say that a wider range of metals and plastics can now be recycled in your green box along with glass as before; please see below for details.

The following table gives examples of what you can and can not put in your green box at collection time.

Yes please ✔
No thanks ✖
Plastic types 1 (PETE), 2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE), 5 (PP) and 6 (PS) including items such as drinks bottles, household cleaning and detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, food containers and tubs such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, microwavable meal trays
Type 3 plastic (PVC)
Metal including aerosol cans, clean foil and takeaway containers, aluminium cans, steel and tin food and drink cans, bottle tops and jar lids
Plastic shopping bags and bin liners
Glass including clear, green, brown and blue glass bottles and jars
Expanded polystyrene packaging ✖
Drinking glasses, glass cookware, windowpane glass and spectacles
Ceramics and tiles
General waste ✖
Paper and cardboard - continue to put this into your blue wheeled bin
Textiles - these can be taken to recycling centres and points across the city

Please wash and squash all cans, plastic bottles and food containers

We ask that you present your green box on the kerbside by 7.30am on your collection day to ensure it is emptied.

The contents of your green box are loaded into a refuse collection vehicle and then taken to Baldovie Transfer station for short term storage.  They are then taken to a Materials Recovery Facility within Scotland where they are separated into different material types using a combination of electrical and electronic techniques plus manual quality control. This process ensures that all material types - even down to the different colours of glass - are recovered and are of a high enough quality for recycling.
