Tips for Driving Safely

Dundee City Council City Development Department offers the following safety advice with regard to winter travel in bad conditions:

  • always ensure your vehicle is prepared and fit for the journey
  • if the journey is not absolutely necessary, then do not make it
  • carry a blanket or extra clothing and a spade in case of being stuck or a breakdown occurring
  • adjust your speed to the road condition
  • allow extra stopping distance on slushy or icy roads
  • don't drive too close to the car in front
  • allow extra time for your journey when the weather is bad
  • if you get stuck don’t abandon your vehicle; stay with it until help comes to you. If you must leave it, try to make sure it is out of the path of gritters and snow ploughs.
